|On December 18, 2012, the Fullerton City Council approved an amended contract with MG Disposal, the City's trash hauler. The amendments include that hauling rates for a two year period - through June 30, 2014 are "frozen" – the former contract terms allowed an annual increase equal to the Consumer Price Index (CPI). This saves the average customer about $0.30 savings a month on the monthly rates of $18.60. The two-year frozen rate also lowers the base rate in future calculations, until the end of the contract term on June 30, 2027. The City does not control the rate for disposal at the landfills, which may be increased by the County of Orange annually. Rates are calculated to include both the cost of hauling and the cost of disposal at the landfill. |
In addition, since 2009, the City of Fullerton and MG Disposal have partnered in the "Recycle Fullerton" program which combines automated trash collection with broader recycling and yard waste collection. The program uses three 96 or 64-gallon containers; a green cart for recyclable items, a brown cart for yard waste and a black cart for non-recyclable trash. Sorting waste into the appropriate containers not only saves landfill space and conserves natural resources; it also helps ensure all weekly household materials fit inside the automated collection containers.
To help encourage recycling, additional brown yard waste and green recycle carts are provided free-of-charge. Effective March 1, 2013, residents wanting an extra black cart will be charged a monthly fee of $4.56 for each extra black non-recyclable trash cart and residents who currently have an additional black cart may return them to MG Disposal. Residents will not be charged for any extra brown yard waste or green recycle carts.
In addition, as part of MG Disposal's support for the Fullerton community, they have increased their annual support of citywide community programs from $100,000 to $300,000. These funds support the production of events such as the annual 4th of July fireworks show, which is free to residents, as well as to other community programs.
Residents desiring additional green or brown carts or to return their extra black carts can contact MG Disposal at (714) 238-2444 or www.mgdisposal.net.
