When Delphine Hirasuna found a small bird pin in her mother’s attic, she did not realize the adventure she had begun. Like many other Japanese Americans, Hirasuna’s mother was forced into an internment camp after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. There were few possessions for the internees, but through found objects, they created beauty.

On Sunday, October 14, at 2 p.m. Delphine Hirasuna will tell her mother’s story - as well as the stories of other internees - at Fullerton Public Library’s Community Room. She curates hundreds of these art pieces, and has written a book, “The Art of Gaman” to bring light to these works. Her collection of gaman will be shown in Tokyo at the end of October.

This event is part of Fullerton Reads, an initiative aiming to get the city of Fullerton to read and discuss one book. “Farewell to Manzanar” is this year’s choice for Fullerton Reads.

Further information about the program may be obtained by calling the Fullerton Public Library at (714) 738-6327.  Persons requiring special accommodations to attend the program are asked to notify the library staff prior to October 13.
